Zoom interviews: the new normal?

As more and more companies move their hiring processes online due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic changing their view on how they do business.  It’s essential to be well-prepared for virtual interviews. While some aspects of virtual interviews may differ from traditional in-person interviews, there are still several ways to ensure you make a great impression. In this blog, we’ll discuss Tursa’s tips on interviewing well in Zoom.

How to ace a job interview on Zoom

1. Prepare your environment

The setting is one of the most significant differences between in-person and virtual interviews. Make sure your environment is clean and professional-looking. Remove any distracting or inappropriate items from the background, and make sure the lighting is good.

If you have a basic setting behind you, you can try virtual backgrounds, but sometimes you can add a touch of flair to your interview yourself!

2. Test your camera and microphone before the interview

Test your camera and microphone beforehand to ensure they’re working correctly.

3. Dress and look professional

When interviewing for a job on Zoom, it’s important to dress professionally even if you’re doing it from home. This shows that you’re serious about the opportunity and helps you get into the right mindset. When choosing what to wear to an interview, typically, appropriate business attire will be acceptable for Zoom interviews. Keep your clothing clean and pressed, and pay attention to your posture and body language. By presenting yourself well, you can make a positive first impression and increase your chances of getting the job.

4. Study and practice your responses

Just like in-person interviews, preparing for common interview questions is essential. Practice your responses beforehand, and make sure you have specific examples to support your answers. You can also practice your body language and facial expressions to appear confident and engaged.

5. Minimise distractions

Make sure you’re in a quiet, distraction-free environment during your interview. Turn off your phone and any computer notifications to avoid interruptions. If you have roommates or family members at home, inform them that you’ll be in an interview and ask them to avoid making noise.

6. Be mindful of your body language

Body language is just as important in virtual interviews as in in-person interviews. Ensure you maintain good posture, eye contact, and smile when appropriate. Avoid fidgeting or slouching, which can make you appear disinterested or unprofessional.

7. Use technology to your advantage

Virtual interviews offer several advantages that you can use to your benefit. For example, you can have notes, or your resume pulled up on your computer screen for reference. You can also use the chat feature to ask for clarification or to provide additional information. Just ask for permission before using any technology during the interview.

8. Follow up after the interview

Just like in-person interviews, it’s essential to follow up after a virtual consultation. Send a thank-you email to the interviewer within 24 hours, thanking them for their time and reiterating your interest in the position. This will not only show your gratitude, but it will also keep you top of mind for the hiring manager.
