Two Different Stories. One Powerful Truth: You Can Find Work You Want

Finding work isn’t just about getting any job — it’s about finding the right job.

At TURSA, we work with people from all walks of life. Each person comes to us with different experiences, goals, strengths, and barriers. The two stories below show just how different those journeys can be — and how the right, personalised support can lead to meaningful employment that fits the individual, not the other way around.

These real‑life stories highlight what’s possible when people who want to work are supported in a way that recognises who they are and what they want to achieve.

On the surface, these two stories couldn’t be more different.

  • Different backgrounds
  • Different challenges
  • Different employment goals

But they share one important thing in common: both participants wanted to work — and both achieved outcomes that mattered to them.

At TURSA, we don’t believe in one‑size‑fits‑all employment services. These stories show how tailored support, genuine listening, and practical assistance can help people move into roles that suit their skills, interests, and long‑term goals.

How TURSA supports people into work

Your Journey with TURSA

Employment Support Built Around You

What makes the difference isn’t luck — it’s individualised support.

TURSA works closely with each participant to:

  • Understand their employment goals and interests
  • Identify strengths, skills, and transferable experience
  • Address individual barriers to employment
  • Build confidence and job readiness at the right pace
  • Match people with employers and roles that actually suit them

Whether someone is returning to work, changing direction, or entering the workforce for the first time, our approach adapts to the individual — not the other way around.

Support designed around you

More Than Just a Job

Getting a job is important.
Getting a job you want, that fits your life and your goals, is transformative.

These stories show that:

  • Meaningful employment is achievable
  • Barriers can be addressed with the right support
  • Confidence grows when people feel heard and respected
  • Long‑term outcomes are stronger when the job is the right fit

At TURSA, success isn’t measured by quick placements — it’s measured by sustainable, meaningful outcomes that participants are proud of.

From Long-Term Unemployment to Meaningful Work: Jamie’s Journey with TURSA

Sometimes, all it takes to change a life is the right support, the right employer — and someone willing to believe in you.

A strong collaboration between TURSA and a highly supportive local employer has helped Jamie, an Indigenous jobseeker, move from long‑term unemployment into meaningful, ongoing work. Twelve weeks on, the outcome is still delivering positive feedback — and most importantly, Jamie is now off income support and building a new future.

What Inclusive Employment Really Looks Like
The managers at Breakwall Holiday Park described the transformation best: “From the very beginning, all of us knew that Jamie was worth it. He was simply stuck in a place that no one would ever want to be. What he needed most was kindness, empathy and a non‑judgmental approach. The difference between who Jamie was when he arrived and the person he is today is night and day.” They also shared that guests have begun commenting positively on Jamie’s work and interactions — feedback that has further strengthened his confidence and sense of belonging. This is what inclusive employment looks like in action. Not just filling a role — but changing a life.

Building Confidence Before Employment

When Jamie first connected with TURSA, he had been registered for many weeks. Long term unemployment had taken a toll. Low confidence, anxiety around job searching, unstable housing and limited recent work experience made finding employment feel overwhelming.

Rather than rushing straight into job applications, TURSA focused on getting the foundations right first.

Jamie was supported through STEPS, a culturally appropriate personal development program designed to help Indigenous participants overcome non‑vocational barriers to work. Through STEPS, Jamie worked on:

  • rebuilding confidence and self‑belief
  • developing routine and motivation
  • understanding workplace expectations
  • strengthening communication and interview skills
  • identifying realistic and achievable employment goals

Alongside the program, TURSA helped Jamie access counselling and housing support services — providing stability and breathing room so he could focus on what came next.

A Local Employer Willing to Give Someone a Chance

Through TURSA’s strong employer relationships, Jamie was introduced to NRMA Breakwall Holiday Park, a local employer known for their inclusive and people‑first approach.

Jamie didn’t arrive with a perfect résumé — but he did arrive with willingness, honesty and a desire to work. To support both Jamie and the employer, TURSA arranged a paid work trial, giving Jamie the chance to show what he could do in a real workplace, and giving the employer confidence before making a decision.

That paid work trial made all the difference.

Jamie showed up, worked hard, followed instructions and took pride in learning new skills. By the end of the trial, it was clear he had earned his place.

He was offered ongoing employment within the maintenance team.

Ongoing Support That Makes Employment Stick

Getting the job was just the beginning.

TURSA continued to support Jamie with practical assistance, including work clothing, a mobile phone and a bicycle to help overcome transport barriers. Regular post‑placement check‑ins with both Jamie and the employer helped ensure the role stayed on track and any issues were addressed early.

At the 12‑week mark, TURSA successfully achieved a full outcome, with both Jamie and the employer still providing positive feedback.

Most importantly, Jamie is now off payment, gaining confidence, stability and pride in his work.

Partner With TURSA

At TURSA, we know that long‑term unemployment doesn’t reflect a lack of ability — it often reflects a lack of opportunity.

If you’re an employer who believes in people, values diversity, and is open to supported pathways like paid work trials, we’d love to work with you. TURSA provides the support, mentoring and follow‑up that makes employment sustainable — for both participants and employers.

More Than Jobs: Songline Bush Café offers Inclusion

Inclusive employment is real when it feels like belonging.

Jess (Manager) shares what it’s like opening and operating a cafe where staff are supported, encouraged and given the space they need to thrive.

Songlines Bush Cafe logo

“I feel at home when I come to work.” — Heidi (Participant)

At Songline Bush Café, Heidi’s day starts with preparation — opening up, getting everything ready, and setting high standards before service begins.

“It’s not something that I dread doing. It’s something I’m happy to go and do every day.”

“I do the prep work, open up, start everything, do cleaning, make sure everything’s ready for the day.”

Creativity in the kitchen — and connection to culture

For Heidi, the best part of working at Songline Bush Café is the kitchen — being creative, contributing, and working in a place that reflects her culture and community.

“I like all the cooking most… being able to be creative in the kitchen.”
“I’m Aboriginal, so working with my own culture as well.”

“I love waking up and knowing that I get to come here, be around my people and work at Songline.”

Getting ready to return to work

After time away from employment, Heidi describes losing motivation — something many people experience.
Returning to work at Songline helped her rebuild routine, confidence, and momentum.

“It helped me get ready to be back at work… I kind of lost motivation, but it definitely helped me get that back.”

“It definitely helped me get that back.”

The support behind the opportunity

Heidi’s role at Songline Bush Café came from being connected to the right opportunity at the right time — and then being supported to settle back into work. “I just got a call saying there was a job opportunity open. I said yep, I’ll take it.”
  • Connecting participants to local job opportunities
  • Supporting the transition back into work
  • Working with employers like Songline Bush Café
  • Ongoing support focused on sustainable employment

Heidi’s advice to others

Heidi’s message is practical and honest — take opportunities where you can, keep moving forward, and build confidence. “Try to find any opportunity you can, even if it’s volunteering.” “Gain confidence in yourself — employers notice when you’ve got something going on in your life.”

Goals in motion

With work at Songline back in place, Heidi is focusing on her goals — including licensing, saving, and exploring further training in cooking or baking. “I’m actually getting a lot of my goals done.”

Songline Bush Café shows how inclusive employment can work when employers are supported to build strong, respectful workplaces.

If you’re an employer and want to explore inclusive employment, TURSA can help you understand options and support sustainable outcomes.

Heidi’s story shows it’s possible to return to work, rebuild motivation, and feel a sense of belonging.

If you’re looking for support to find the right opportunity and stay supported once you start, TURSA can help.

Victory House at Mundoolun: A Tractor Powering Recovery & Job Readiness

Funded by the TURSA Community Grant Program, the tractor is helping men rebuild skills, confidence and careers on the farm.
About Victory House & the Project

Victory House is a residential rehabilitation and employment‑readiness program operating at the Mundoolun farm. Through stable housing, mentoring and accredited training in land management, construction and agriculture, the program supports men overcoming addiction, homelessness and long‑term unemployment to reconnect with purpose and work.

With funding from TURSA’s Community Grant, Victory House acquired a tractor to enable hands‑on training and to maintain the property safely and efficiently giving participants real‑world skills that translate directly to local jobs and apprenticeships

Why TURSA Invested

In celebrating 30 years of service, Tursa Employment & Training launched a $1,000,000 Community Grant Program to back local not‑for‑profits that strengthen communities and create pathways into employment. Typical grants averaged up to $30,000, with exceptional initiatives receiving more.

Victory House’s tractor project aligns directly with TURSA’s mission: employment starts with a strong, connected community.

“TURSA genuinely believes in the strength and resilience of our local communities… The Community Grant Program is our way of backing local not‑for‑profits so they can have an even greater impact." “Supporting people into employment is central to our mission—but that journey starts with a strong, connected community.”

About TURSA’s Community Grant Program

The TURSA Community Grant Program targets 30+ not‑for‑profit organisations to boost capacity, strengthen support networks for vulnerable people, and encourage collaboration.

The Importance of Strong Partnerships with Employers

Creating Sustainable and Inclusive Employment

One of the critical factors in achieving sustainable and inclusive employment for people with disabilities is the establishment of strong partnerships with employers. These partnerships are crucial for several reasons:

  • Understanding and Awareness: Employers who partner with disability organisations gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities. This awareness helps in creating a more inclusive workplace culture.
  • Customised Support: Strong partnerships enable employers to provide tailored support and accommodations that meet the specific needs of employees with disabilities. This can include adaptive technologies, flexible work arrangements, and accessible workspaces.
  • Talent Utilisation: People with disabilities bring unique skills and perspectives to the workplace. Employers can tap into a diverse talent pool by fostering inclusive employment practices and enhancing organisational creativity and innovation.
  • Legal and Ethical Compliance: Collaborating with disability advocacy groups ensures employers comply with legal requirements and ethical standards for disability inclusion. This not only protects the rights of employees but also enhances the company’s reputation.
  • Economic Benefits: Inclusive employment practices can increase employee satisfaction, reduce turnover, and improve productivity. These factors contribute to the overall economic success of the organisation.
