Building Community, One Shed at a Time: TURSA and Ballina Men’s Shed

TURSA & Ballina Men’s Shed | Community Grants, Volunteer Support & Inclusive Spaces
When you step into the Ballina Community Men’s Shed today, you’ll find more than timber, tools, and projects—you’ll find a story of resilience, collaboration, and transformation. Moreover, thanks to TURSA’s Community Grant Program and volunteer initiatives, this local hub has evolved into a safer, more inclusive space that strengthens community ties and creates pathways to employment.

From Disaster Recovery to Renewal

The Men’s Shed was hit by the 2022 floods and Cyclone Alfred, leaving its retaining wall foundations compromised and walls unstable. For many members—retirees, veterans, and people seeking connection—the shed is more than a workspace; it’s a lifeline for mental health and social engagement. Consequently, recognising this, TURSA stepped in with a grant to fund critical structural repairs, ensuring the building could continue serving as a safe haven for its 84 members and the broader community.

Creating Accessible Spaces

Beyond repairs, the project focused on inclusivity. Volunteers, guided by experienced tradespeople, installed disability-friendly pathways, built access ramps, and fitted secure sliding doors. As a result, these upgrades mean that people of all abilities can participate fully in shed activities—from woodworking and metalwork to crafting wildlife boxes for local carers.

Empowering Through Volunteering

TURSA’s Volunteer Program turned this initiative into a hands-on training ground. Participants gained practical construction skills, boosted their confidence, and connected with mentors in a supportive environment. For many, this experience wasn’t just about giving back—it was about stepping forward into new opportunities. As one update noted, “Participants have demonstrated reliability, a positive attitude, and strong teamwork,” with several moving closer to employment outcomes.

A Grant That Goes Beyond Dollars

This project is part of TURSA’s Community Grant Program, launched to celebrate 30 years of empowering communities. The program backs smaller not for profit organisations that make a tangible difference—whether it’s repairing a shed, funding disability-adapted cycles, or supporting mental health initiatives. For TURSA, these investments aren’t just charity; they’re strategic steps toward stronger, more connected communities where job seekers can thrive.

The Impact So Far

  • Structural Repairs Completed: Foundations stabilised, retaining walls repaired.
  • Accessibility Upgrades: Ramps and pathways installed for inclusive access.
  • Volunteer Engagement: Dozens of participants gained skills and confidence.
  • Community Connection: A revitalised space fostering mental health and social inclusion.
As Noel, the Men’s Shed President, shared recently, “We’re delighted with the participants’ efforts—and the support from TURSA
