The Apiary Toowoomba

For many women experiencing homelessness, domestic and family violence, or significant disadvantage, finding safety is only the first step. Rebuilding confidence, developing independence and creating a secure future often requires ongoing support, practical opportunities and a community that believes in their potential.

This understanding sits at the heart of the partnership between TURSA and Protea Place, a Toowoomba-based women’s support service that has been helping women navigate some of life’s most challenging circumstances.

Over the years, Protea Place recognised that while crisis support is essential, many women needed something more. They needed a place where they could take the next steps towards independence while remaining connected to the support networks that had helped them through difficult times. This vision led to the creation of The Apiary, a purpose-built community space designed to bridge the gap between crisis support and sustainable opportunity.

The Apiary provides women with a welcoming environment where they can learn new skills, build confidence and reconnect with their goals. It is a place where progress happens at an individual’s pace, recognising that every journey is different and that meaningful change is often achieved through consistent support rather than quick solutions.

Through our partnership with Protea Place, TURSA contributes employment expertise and pathway planning that complements the organisation’s trauma-informed approach. Together, we help create opportunities for women to develop workplace skills, explore employment options and build confidence in their ability to succeed.

A key strength of The Apiary is its focus on practical experience. Whether serving customers through the Honeypot Coffee Lounge or developing retail and customer service skills through the Labels With Love Boutique, women are given opportunities to gain hands-on experience in supportive, real-world environments. These experiences help build confidence while developing transferable skills that can support future employment opportunities.

The impact extends far beyond work readiness. As women reconnect with routines, learn new skills and achieve personal goals, they often begin to see new possibilities for themselves and their future. This growth creates positive ripple effects for families, communities and local employers alike.

What makes The Apiary unique is the way it brings community, support and opportunity together in one place. Local organisations, community groups and service providers share the space, creating an environment built on connection rather than isolation. This collaborative approach ensures women are supported not only through times of crisis but throughout their journey towards greater independence and stability.

For TURSA, partnerships like this demonstrate the power of working together. Lasting outcomes are rarely achieved by a single organisation acting alone. They are created when community organisations combine their strengths, share a common purpose and remain focused on empowering people to build better futures.

The work taking place at The Apiary is a powerful example of what can be achieved when support extends beyond immediate needs and focuses on long-term opportunities. Together, TURSA and Protea Place are helping women gain confidence, develop skills and take positive steps towards a future defined not by their challenges, but by their potential.
