TURSA Community Grant Supports New Child, Family and Community Hub in the Northern Rivers

The TURSA 30 Year Community Grant Program is helping create brighter outcomes for Northern Rivers children and families through support for Family Support Network’s Child, Family and Community Hub.

Funding from the TURSA Community Grants Program has enabled Family Support Network to transform its playgroup space into a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where children aged 0–5 can learn through play, caregivers can build stronger connections and families can access valuable community support.

Supporting Early Childhood Development Through Play

The enhanced Child, Family and Community Hub now features a range of developmentally appropriate resources designed to encourage curiosity, creativity and confidence. Through open-ended play experiences, children can build early literacy skills through storytelling and mark making, develop numeracy through sorting, counting and pattern play, and strengthen fine motor skills through creative activities.

Every experience is designed to support learning through play while allowing children to explore their own interests and develop at their own pace.

Creating Opportunities for Active Play

New gross motor equipment has also made a significant impact on children’s development. Children are building coordination, balance, confidence and spatial awareness as they move, climb, jump and explore in a safe and supervised environment.

The addition of a foam pit has quickly become a favourite among young visitors, providing opportunities for sensory play, whole-body movement and supported risk-taking that helps build both physical skills and self-confidence.

Strengthening Family and Community Connections

Importantly, the Child, Family and Community Hub benefits more than children alone. The space has been intentionally designed to encourage caregivers and children to play, create and learn together, supporting positive family interactions and stronger relationships. Families can spend quality time together while connecting with other local families, helping reduce social isolation and build a stronger sense of community.

The response from Northern Rivers families has been overwhelmingly positive. Caregivers have praised the variety of toys, creative materials and engaging activities available, as well as the welcoming atmosphere that encourages connection and belonging. Many families have shared how much they value having a space where children remain engaged, can revisit favourite activities each week and where caregivers feel comfortable building relationships with others in their community.

Delivering Lasting Community Impact

The project reflects Family Support Network’s vision of creating safe, inclusive environments that promote child wellbeing, early intervention and community connection.

Through the support of the TURSA Community Grants Program, these resources will continue to benefit hundreds of Northern Rivers children and families for years to come. The hub provides a welcoming space that supports healthy child development, strengthens family relationships and creates opportunities for learning, belonging and connection throughout the community.
