The Employment Opportunity That Took Two Taree Cousins to the Heart of Australia

In June, the pair packed their bags and headed to Uluru to begin their hospitality traineeships. Since arriving, they have embraced every aspect of the experience. From learning new skills on the job to meeting people from across Australia, the traineeship has given them opportunities that extend well beyond the workplace.

For cousins Myarla and Lakara, a conversation about work opportunities turned into an experience that would take them from Taree, thousands of kilometres away to the heart of Australia in Alice Springs.

After working with TURSA to explore their employment options, both young women were keen to find an opportunity outside of their local region. They wanted something that would challenge them, help them build new skills, and allow them to grow professionally.

With guidance from their Employment Advisers, they participated in programs designed to prepare them for the workforce and give them the confidence to take the next step. Along the way, they developed practical skills, gained valuable experience, and began thinking more broadly about what their future could look like.

When the opportunity to apply for the Voyages Indigenous Traineeship Program became available, both Myarla and Lakara jumped at the chance. TURSA supported them through the STEPS Program, helping build confidence, develop workplace readiness skills, and strengthen their belief in what they could achieve.

Throughout their journey, TURSA provided tailored guidance and support, assisting with job applications, interview preparation, and required documentation, empowering them to take the final steps towards securing their traineeship.
