Sometimes, all it takes to change a life is the right support, the right opportunity and someone willing to believe in you.
When Jamie first connected with TURSA, he had been experiencing long-term unemployment and was facing several challenges that made finding work difficult. Like many people who spend an extended period out of the workforce, his confidence had taken a significant hit. Combined with housing instability, limited recent work experience and anxiety around job searching, finding a pathway into employment felt overwhelming.
Rather than rushing straight into job applications, TURSA focused on helping Jamie rebuild his confidence and address the barriers that were standing in his way. Through the STEPS program, Jamie worked on developing routine, strengthening his communication skills, understanding workplace expectations and setting realistic employment goals. TURSA also helped connect him with housing and counselling supports, providing the stability he needed to focus on his future.
The work trial soon led to an offer of ongoing employment within the maintenance team, a milestone that marked the beginning of a new chapter in Jamie’s life. More than twelve weeks later, he continues to thrive in the role. With ongoing support from TURSA, including assistance with work clothing, a mobile phone and transport, Jamie has been able to maintain his employment and continue building his confidence, independence and sense of purpose.
The transformation has been evident to everyone around him. The management team at NRMA Breakwall Holiday Park reflected on Jamie’s journey, saying,
“From the very beginning, all of us knew that Jamie was worth it. He was simply stuck in a place that no one would ever want to be. What he needed most was kindness, empathy and a non-judgmental approach. The difference between who Jamie was when he arrived and the person he is today is night and day.”
They also shared that guests regularly comment on Jamie’s positive attitude and the quality of his work, feedback that has further strengthened his confidence and sense of belonging.
Today, Jamie is not only employed but thriving. He has moved off income support, gained greater independence and is building a future shaped by stability, purpose and self-belief. His story is a powerful reminder that long-term unemployment does not define a person’s potential. Sometimes, all that is needed is the right support, an employer willing to look beyond a résumé, and an opportunity to prove what is possible. For TURSA and NRMA Breakwall Holiday Park, Jamie’s success is a reflection of what can happen when people come together to create opportunities that genuinely change lives.
