A Safe Place to Rest: How Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre Is Changing Lives

For more than 40 years, Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) has been a place of support, connection and hope for people across Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast. From providing community meals and homelessness outreach to assisting individuals experiencing domestic violence, mental health challenges and financial hardship, MNC has built a reputation as a welcoming and inclusive space where people can access practical help when they need it most.

Based in Cotton Tree, the centre works alongside community members every day, offering a range of programs and services that help people overcome challenges and reconnect with opportunities. Its commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals has made a lasting impact on countless lives throughout the region.

One of the centre’s most significant initiatives is the Sunny Coast Sleeper, a service that provides a safe and secure place for people experiencing homelessness to sleep. Originally launched in 2022 as Sleepbus following a major community fundraising effort, the service offered private sleeping pods within a converted bus, giving people access to dignity, warmth and safety during some of the most difficult periods of their lives.

When the national Sleepbus charity ceased operations in 2025, there was concern that this vital service would be lost. Determined to ensure support remained available for the local community, MNC stepped forward, taking ownership of the service and relaunching it as the Sunny Coast Sleeper. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, community donors and local partners, the service continues to provide immediate relief for those who need it most.

Today, the Sunny Coast Sleeper operates in Maroochydore on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, with services also extending to Nambour. For many guests, a safe night’s sleep is more than just rest. It provides stability, improves wellbeing and offers an opportunity to reconnect with support services that can help them move forward.

The continuation of the Sunny Coast Sleeper has been made possible through strong community collaboration, including funding support from TURSA Employment & Training. By investing in local initiatives that support people facing disadvantage, TURSA is helping create pathways towards greater stability, independence and wellbeing.

This partnership highlights the power of organisations working together to address complex community challenges. Through the combined efforts of Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre, Sunshine Coast Council, TURSA, local service providers and dedicated volunteers, people experiencing homelessness can access not only a safe place to sleep but also connections to health services, counselling, meals, training opportunities and ongoing support.

Every night the Sunny Coast Sleeper operates is a reminder of what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared purpose. The service is supported by people who generously donate their time, skills and resources to help others, creating a network of care that extends far beyond the bus itself.
